The Food Amnesia, ‘I need my energy’ Story.
Once upon a time, not too long ago, actually it was last month (March 2008). I’m about to go into see a patient that I saw two months before as a new weight loss patient. Before I entered the room I reviewed her weight loss progress and noticed that she had lost only 1 or 2 pounds since she started at our clinic.
I was amazed when I looked at myself when I was 38 years old and I was 250 pounds. I was at least 75 pounds over what I should weigh. I hated myself. I looked at my wife and wondered how she could have been attracted to me when I was so fat. My back was always killing me and I could not even keep up with my 5 kids.
The most common misconception when it comes to obesity is that people need to just stop eating too much and go exercise. Simplistic at best, and completely false at worse, it offers no real solution for those who are trying to lose weight. Why? Obesity is a disease and it must be treated as one.
Liquid Amnesia is a term that I use with my patients as I am analyzing their daily nutrition questionarre that they fill out for me at their new patient appointment. What I found quite often is that many people do not consider that what they are drinking throughout their day can have considerable calories in it.
I will be sitting down with a patient discussing their weight loss struggles. I see on their chart that over the last month that they did not lose any weight. Before I can say anything the patient will lean forward in a hushed tone and say, ”Dr. Powell, I have a secret. I’m a stress eater”.
